FDA Requests Market Withdrawal of Diet Drug Belviq Due to Cancer Risk

FDA Requests Market Withdrawal of Diet Drug Belviq Due to Cancer RiskTHURSDAY, Feb. 13, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- A clinical trial of the weight-loss drug Belviq (lorcaserin) shows an association with an increased risk of cancer, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is requesting that its maker withdraw the drug from the U.S. market. Now, "we're taking steps to notify the public," she said, adding that "our review of the full clinical trial results shows that the potential risk of cancer associated with the drug outweighs the benefit of treatment." Woodcock said the FDA is advising that "patients should stop using the medication Belviq and Belviq XR...

How Does Social Media Shape Your Food Choices?MONDAY, Feb. 10, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- For better or worse, your social media friends might be influencing your eating habits, British researchers report. But they also helped themselves to an extra portion of unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks for every three portions they believed their online friends had. "This study suggests we may be influenced by our social peers more than we realize when choosing certain foods," said study co-leader Lily Hawkins, a doctoral student in health...

The work is inspired by the rooftop farm at Boston Medical Center. The farm, in place since 2017, harvests more than two tons of fresh vegetables yearly and distributes them to their preventive food pantry and hospital kitchen. "The rooftop farm is this amazing farm operation in a hospital," said Dr....

AHA News: Before Grabbing a Grapefruit, Understand Its PowerFRIDAY, Jan. 17, 2020 (American Heart Association News) -- Grapefruit looks sweet and friendly, but you might have heard it possesses powers far beyond those of ordinary produce. Some of that reputation is fact, and some is myth. Facts first: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, half a medium grapefruit has only 41 calories and nearly half a day's recommended supply of vitamin C. "In addition, it's a reasonable source of potassium," which is important for maintaining healthy blood pressure, said Karen Collins, a registered dietitian in western New York who specializes in cancer prevention and heart health. Grapefruit also is laden with natural plant compounds called phytochemicals, specifically flavonoids, which studies show can help fight stroke and heart disease....
